With all the hype around the upcoming musical drama, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, we can’t help but show our excitement for the amazing cast and crew attached to the project. The show stars Jane Levy as a young computer coder in San Francisco who finds herself with the unique gift of being able to hear the innermost dreams and desires of the people in her life through songs, which they express to her through music.
Here are some of the primary actors in the show:
Jane Levy
The star of the show is Jane Levy. She made a name for herself playing the lead in the TV show Suburgatory and gained further popularity acting in two Fede Alvarez horror films, the remake of Evil Dead, and Don’t Breathe. The California native studied at Goucher College for a year and then moved on to the Stella Adler Studio of Acting to pursue her dreams. Her first break was a recurring part on the TV show Shameless in 2011. Her other film credits include Nobody Walks in 2011, Funsize (2012), About Alex (2014), I Don’t feel at Home in This World Anymore (2017), and Office Uprising (2018). She also starred in the Hulu horror series “Castle Rock” as Diane “Jackie” Torrance in 2018 and the Netflix show “What/If” in 2019.
Skylar Astin
Skylar Astin is a face most teens and young adults will be familiar with. He gained notoriety playing Jesse Swanson in the musical films Pitch Perfect (2012), and Pitch Perfect 2 (2015). He played Greg Serrano in the last season of Crazy Ex-girlfriend. Film credits include Hamlet 2 (2008), Taking Woodstock (2009), Cavemen (2013), and 21 & Over all in that same year. He is also proud to have been in the original cast of the Broadway musical, Spring Awakening. He is acting in the role of Max in the new series.
Peter Gallagher
Peter Gallagher has been in many films over the course of his career. He is playing the part of Zoey’s father, Mitch, in this series. He starred in the drama series The O.C. as Sandy Cohen for four years. Other well-known roles include Deputy Chief William Dodds on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, CIA Director Arthur Campbell on Covert Affairs, and Nick in Grace & Frankie on Netflix, but it’s hard to forget his role as the comatose love interest in While You Were Sleeping (1995).
Alex Newell
You’ll know Alex from his role as Unique Adams on the musical TV series, Glee. He will be playing the role of Mo in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. He also played the starring role of Asaka in Once on This Island at the Circle in the Square Theater. He is a well-known singer who has released tracks with Clean Bandit, Blonde, and The Knocks.
John Clarence Stewart
John played the role of Lionel on the TV series What/If and is also known for his role as Alex Wesley in the series Luke Cage. Other credits include Marcus on Skin Deep, the Series, and roles on The Good Fight, Blue Bloods, The Mysteries of Laura, and Gotham. He will be playing the role of Simon, a marketing executive at Zoey’s company.
Lauren Graham
Lauren Graham gained a name for herself playing the part of Lorelai in the beloved show, Gilmore Girls. From there she went on to play Sarah Braverman in the show Parenthood and has since worked on Curb Your Enthusiasm and Linda From HR, as well as done voiceover for the show Vampirina. Lauren has also written four books and starred on the Broadway production of Guys and Dolls.
Mary Steenburgen
Mary, who plays Zoey’s mother on the show, is a well-known actress. Early in her career, she played the role of Lynda Dummar in the 1980 film, Melvin and Howard. She won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for this role. She was in the 1981 film, Ragtime, which earned her another Golden Globe nomination. You may also know her for her role in the miniseries, Tender Is the Night, her Emmy nomination for the TV movie, The Attic: The Hiding of Anne Frank, and many other film roles.
Austin Winsberg
Austin, the creator and showrunner, made a name for himself as the creator of the show Jake in Progress. Austin wrote the Broadway musical First Date, and you’ll recognize his work as writer of the TV adaptation of The Sound of Music Live! which starred Carrie Underwood.
Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg
Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg are also attached to the show as writers and producers. As a writing and producing team they have worked on some of the most well loved and popular shows over the last two decades. After their initial success writing for the show Beverly Hills 90210, Berg and Harberts have since worked on hit shows like Revenge, Pushing Daises, Mercy, Roswell, Reign, and GCB. Best known for their comedy and drama writing styles, the team of Berg and Harberts are a perfect fit for this upcoming musical dramedy.
